Types of Central Virginia Farms
In parts of the country, a farm is just a farm. If it’s in the West, a farm is probably a ranch. If it’s in Iowa it’s likely to be a farm with crops or livestock. But in Virginia, it’s not so simple to describe Virginia farms. And nowhere in Virginia are farms more diverse than the farms of Charlottesville and Central VA. So let’s explore a few types of farms to help you narrow your home search to the properties that most match your goals.
Charlottesville Horse Farms and Equestrian Estates
As an equestrian, one of my own real estate specialties is representing the many gorgeous equestrian farms in Charlottesville and Central VA … so let’s talk about horse farms first for a couple of reasons. In addition to my own experience with farms, the horse farms of Charlottesville provide the bucolic scenery and quietly elegant architecture that give Central VA its character. Since Virginia was first settled, colonial farms included magnificent traditional estates with stables, arenas, rings, paddocks, and vast pastures. When I see horses in their pastures today, tails softly whisking as they bask contentedly in the sunny breezes amid the grassy pastures, I know that I am seeing a traditional scene that our historic Virginia forefathers also saw.
Virginia horse farms tend to be somewhat traditional, and there is no more evidence of that tradition than the many fox hunt clubs near Charlottesville. In fact, here is a link to help you find foxhunting clubs, polo matches, three day eventing, horse boarding farms, equestrian veterinarians, and tack supply stores in Charlottesville. Knowing that equestrians have their own needs for property searches, I’ve given you a way to organize your farm search with your own priorities… by acreage, by price, by county, etc… and THIS LINK FOR EQUESTRIAN FARMS FOR SALE NEAR CHARLOTTESVILLE.
Cattle Farms in Virginia
Beef cattle farms and dairy cattle farms have their own structural needs that make the facilities distinctly different from Virginia horse farms. In some ways, cattle farms may not need to be as ‘fancy’ as horse farms are. For instance, horse farms often have lovely 3-board or 4-board fencing whereas cattle may only require sturdy wire and post fences. While we’re on the subject of farm fencing, let’s make sure to give potentials buyers of Virginia farms a link to download details of all types of Virginia Fencing Costs. On the other hand, infrastructure is needed in barns and outbuildings to provide areas for feed lot areas, for dairy cattle to be milked, and for milking equipment to be stored.
Cattle farms vary whether they are a dairy cattle farms or beef cattle farms. The Virginia Cattlemens Association supports the cattle industry with marketing assistance and helps coordination of cattle activities in Virginia. Its counterpart is the Virginia State Dairymen’s Association, where you can find tips and statistics about Virginia’s dairy farms too. If a seller of a Charlottesville farm has indicated that their farm is suitable for cattle, you can see all of the farms for cattle currently on the market in Charlottesville in THIS LINK.
Charlottesville Vineyards and Wineries
Ideal growing conditions make Virginia a mecca for wonderful award-winning wineries. The vineyards that produce the fantastic wines are found all over Charlottesville and adjoining Central VA counties. One of the most familiar of the grape varieties is popular outside of the wine world too, because the Concord seedless grape is perfect for jams and jellies as well.
There are more than three dozen wineries in Charlottesville and surrounding areas that have banded together as the Monticello Wine Trail, which is very popular with tourists and locals alike. In case that’s not familiar to you…. Monticello was the home of Thomas Jefferson located in Charlottesville Virginia, and Thomas Jefferson had extensive vineyards where he experimented with grape varieties for wines that he had sampled all over the world. Charlottesville wineries share Jefferson’s historic love of wine and the details of raising grapes in Central VA. This has led to many award-winning wines after each year’s vineyard production. Also of interest to locals and tourists in Charlottesville are the many micro-breweries that are popping up in Central Virginia … again, because of ideal soils and growing conditions for the ingredients. These include a group of breweries who’ve joined as the Brew Ridge Trail, and include breweries like Starr Hill Brewery, South Street Brewery, Devil’s Backbone Brewery, Blue Mountain Brewery, and Wild Wolf Brewing Company.
Not to be outdone… Charlottesville farmers take advantage of their prized apple harvest to offer us wonderful custom-blended apple cider specialties too. Some of the breweries previously mentioned also offer ciders. In addition are offerings from small quickly growing mom-and-pop businesses like Albemarle Ciderworks, Bold Rock cider, and Castle Hill cider.
